October 28, 2009 Art Business Plan, How to Sell Your Art
How Other Artists are Marketing Their Art Using an Art Business PlanThere are a plethora of ways to market your wonderful creativity in today’s world. With the websites, blogs, social media you can tap into a large market and began to make sales. However, it does take work and take you away from producing your work but with proper management of time you can market your work and began seeing sales.
Building A Mailing List. You can do this by having people sign up for your mailing list when you are have an art show or when people come to your website. Aweber is great email managing tool for capturing emails at your personal website. That’s what I use for this site. You want to gain a list so you can send info about your upcoming shows and sales. Statistics shows the more people are more apt to buy from people they have already bought from previously. You don’t have to look for new sales when you can make sales from people who have already bought from you before so keep a mailing list. I’ve made several sales just by sending a letter to my mailing list about a sale that I was having on my work. With in weeks I had several people contacting me about the letter they got in the mail.
Become A Part of Your Community. What I mean is, become a part of the niche in which your work pertains to. If you paint birds become a part of that community who love birds. Subscribe to bird magazine and so on. Once you become familiar with your community, market your work to that particular community.
Market on the Web. Galleries and Art Festivals still generate money for thousands of artists but the new phenomenon is the internet. Ebay, Etsy, Artspan and many other website have helped artists generate a substaintial amout of sales. Pesonal websites are a must because the first thing someone ask you is, “Do you have a website?” If you say no, it’s like uhhh, you are not professional. So please by all means get you a website, a blog or something to show your presence on the web. Have no fear and began positioning yourself as a serious professional artist on the internet.
Social Media. One sure way to market your work is having not only a website but driving people to your site using social media. Social media is web platform where you can communicate about anything to people within your inner circle or with people with similar interests. Facebook, Twitter, Stumble Upon and so on are leading websites that can be leverage as a means to make sales. There are artists using twitter and facebook to promote their work. Recently I posted an image of a customer holding up a painting she just bought from me and shortly after I posted it I got several people interested in wanting a painting. I did that pacifically to market my work and it work. You can do the same and more.
Make Sales not Exposure. One of the greatest art marketer I know is Jack White who says “Art is to be Sold”. He explains in his book “Making It” that artists should not just display their work for exposure but mainly to display their work to make a sale. For instance, don’t display your work in coffee shops and libraries for exposure becuase noone goes their to buy art. Display your work at places where you people buy art. Galleries, Gift Shop, Art Festivals, The Mall and the web are sure ways to generate sales. Not at your aunt’s coffee shop.
